Ontario Provincial Championships Results – March 18th, 2009
The Canadian Fencing Academy showed a strong performance at the 2009 Provincial Championships at Queen’s University in Kingston. Both the CFA Women’s Foil and Epee team took home the team Gold Medals! The Women’s Foil team consisted of Eleanor Harvey, Leah Fidanza and Gabriela Shand. The Women’s Epee team consisted of Kirsten Ball, Janet Jackowski and Andrea Csiba.
Eleanor Harvey also won the Silver medal in Senior Individual Woman’s Foil! The week prior, Eleanor won the Gold medal at the Vidosa Memorial Ontario Cadet Championship.
The Men’s Epee team of Mark Zielinski, Mike Deinhart and Kyle Foster finished 4th in a very strong field.
CFA DRY FOIL CHAMPIONSHIPS – MAY RESULTS
On the last Thursday of each month the CFA holds the Dry Foil Championships. It is a great opportunity for beginner and intermediate youth and adult fencers to get some tournament training.
Congratulations to this months winners in the YOUTH class, Benji 1st, Spencer 2nd, Ella and Macrae 3rd, Ben 4th, Sam 5th, Sage 6th and Matt 7th. Good Luck next month.
CFA Fencers April REVIEW
Two Golds and a Bronze at Recent Finals for Fencers
Members of the Canadian Fencing Academy, Oakville’s fencing team, recently traveled to Waterloo to represent the Oakville club at the ONTARIO CHALLENGE CIRCUIT FINALS.
The local club dominated the epee division. In women’s epee Janet Jackowski won Gold. In men’s epee Mark Zielinski won Gold. Also competing in epee were Stephen Willson 13th and Roman Jakubowski 20th.
In women’s foil Leah Fidanza won Bronze. Competing in the men’s foil were Rick Behnke 9th, Sam Salerno 16th and Steven Berios 17th.
Members are now preparing for the Canadian Easterns and Nationals coming up next month.
Gold and Bronze medals for Oakville’s CFA fencers at Governor General’s in Ottawa
Members of the Canadian Fencing Academy, Oakville’s fencing team, have recently traveled to Newmarket and Ottawa to represent the Oakville club.
Jack Baldowski and Kirsten Ball, both epeeists, attended the Governor General’s open tournament in Ottawa. Baldowski beat several members of the National team on his way to a Gold medal finish in men’s epee. Ball also had an amazing day winning the Bronze medal in Women’s epee.
Also attending and competing in Women’s Foil were Leah Fidanza, finishing 14th and Eleanor Harvey finishing 13th.
Youth members Eleanor Harvey (foil) Justin Lam (foil) and Roman Jakubowski (epee) recently attended the Youth and Cadet Provincial Championships in Newmarket. Their current Provincial rankings are Harvey 4th in women’s foil, Jakubowski 12th in men’s epee and Lam 15th in men’s foil.
CFA Fencers March REVIEW
Members of the Canadian Fencing Academy have represented Oakville, Ontario and even Canada at recent competitions.
Jack Baldowski and Kirsten Ball, both epeeists, traveled to Montreal to attend a high performance program training event in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. There, they also participated in the Quebec provincial finals, where Baldowski won gold in the veterans’ division and placed 23rd in the open division.
Ball was eighth in women’s epee, and Leah Fidanza placed 15th in women’s foil.
Eleanor Harvey (foil) and Roman Jakubowski (epee) attended the Ontario Winter Games in Collingwood. Harvey won gold in the women’s Y15 division, silver in team foil and bronze in the Y16 division. Jakubowski was 12th in Y15 men’s action.
Fidanza traveled to Illinois for the fifth stop of the North American Cup of Fencing. She was 24th in the veterans’ division, 71st in Division 3 and 104th in Division 2.
CFA Fencers FEBRUARY REVIEW
Members of the Canadian Fencing Academy, Oakville’s fencing team, recently traveled to Quebec City for the Challenge Estoc, an open elite meet.
In men’s epee, Jack Baldowski won the gold and in open women’s epee, Kirsten Ball won the bronze.
On the Youth Circuit, Burke Willson one of the clubs youngest members (six), finished third in foil at a Mississauga tournament. Roman Jakubowski had a top-16 finish in epee at a Newmarket tournament.
Also recently, members traveled to Ottawa for the Ottawa Shield, an open elite tournament. Ball (women’s epee) was the clubs top finisher at 5th place; Janet Jackowski (women’s epee) was 15th. Baldowski (men’s epee) had a top-16 finish. Leah Fidanza came 16th in open women’s foil.
CFA Fencers JAUARY REVIEW
January was a busy month for members of the Canadian Fencing Academy, Oakville’s fencing team.
Some members participated in competitions in Montreal, Ottawa, Atlanta and London, with locals taking home medals from two of the events.
In Montreal, Jack Baldowski (veteran men’s epee) and Kirsten Ball (open women’s epee) claimed gold, while Leah Fidanza came 18th in open women’s foil.
At the next event, the Carleton Team Invitational in Ottawa, the team of Gabriella Shand, Allison Spencer and Fidanza placed fifth in the women’s foil division.
Atlanta was the next stop for Canadian Fencing Academy competitors, where the fourth stop of the North American Cup of Fencing was held. Baldowski was 45th in men’s epee, while Ball placed 72nd in women’s.
The final meet of the month was held in London, the Hero’s Open. Janet Jackowski (silver in women’s epee) and Eleanor Harvey (bronze in women’s foil) were the two local medal-winners, while Fidanza (sixth in women’s foil), Mike Deinhart (12th in men’s epee), Mike Kreder (14th in men’s foil), Stephen Willson (18th in men’s epee) also had strong showings.

GOLD MEDAL and TOP FINISHES FOR FENCERS AT NORTH AMERICA CUP (NAC)
Several members of the Canadian Fencing Academy, Oakville’s fencing team, traveled to Richmond, Virginia, USA for the North America Cup for on December 7-10th.
In Veteran’s Men’s Epee, Jack Baldowski finished 1st bringing the Gold medal to Canada! In Open Women’s Epee, Kirsten Ball finished 34th. In Veteran’s Women’s Foil, Leah Fidanza finished the day in 30th.

CFA FENCERS JACK BALDOWSKI AND KIRSTEN BALL INVITED TO NATIONAL HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
The hard work of The Canadian Fencing Academy of Oakville’s epee fencers, Kirsten Ball (domestic ranking 5th) and Jacek Baldowski (domestic ranking 4th) is paying off. As a result of their performance this season they have been invited to join the High Performance Program as alternates; which the Canadian Fencing Federation uses to determine Canada’s International and Olympic teams.
CFA FENCERS AT SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Several members of the Canadian Fencing Academy, Oakville’s fencing team, traveled to Montreal, Quebec for Senior National Championships on November 24-25.
In Men’s Epee, Jack Baldowski finished 31st.
In Women’s Epee, Kirsten Ball had an exceptional first round, ranked 7th going into Direct Elimination rounds and finished the day in 17th. Janet Jackowski finished in 34th.
In Women’s Foil, Leah Fidanza finished the day in 26th.
Fencers earn medals at Brock Invitational
Jack Baldowski won the gold medal in veteran mixed epee, one of three medals earned by Oakville’s Canadian Fencing Academy at the Brock Invitational Ontario Circuit Competition.
Mark Zielinski won the other two medals, taking the silver after finishing behind Baldowski in the veteran mixed epee. He also earned a bronze medal in the open men’s epee.
Jack and Mark’s one-two finish highlighted a strong showing by the academy in the mixed epee as Kirsten Ball (fifth) and Stephen Wilson (ninth) also turned in top-10 finishes.
In open men’s epee, Wilson was 35th, Johnathan Cheevers 47th and Roman Jakubowski was 53rd. In women’s epee Janet Jackowski finished eighth and Evelyn Zielinski 37th.
In men’s foil Rick Behnke placed sixth and Sam Salerno was 62nd. In women’s foil Leah Fidanza finished in eighth and Ashley Chin placed 19th.
In team competitions, members traveled to Kingston for the RMC Team Invitational. The womens foil team of Leah, Kirsten and Allison Spencer finished in sixth place.
The academy’s youth fencers also turned in some strong results.
At the recent Westdale Tournament, Sean Cavan (11-and-under division) and Maddison Osborne (13-and-under division) took home bronze medals.

CFA has a 1-2 finish in Mens Veteran event at Brock OCC.
